Every few months, the college semesters change and so does the staff of this magazine. Each new group of reporters spends the entire semester writing most of the department content for each issue and working on one extensive journalistic undertaking. This semester, the reporters gave new meaning to the Columbia motto we love to hate — “what you unexpect.”

Their project is our feature this week, but the version you will find in print is just one piece of the multimedia package. The rest can be found on the interwebs — Twitter (@VoxSecrets), Instagram (@VoxMagazine) and a custom website built into ours (voxmagazine.com/LittleKnownSecrets).

These platforms now house approximately 80 of Columbia’s secrets that will surprise even the most seasoned townies.

You probably know Booche’s burgers, but Memorial Row behind its bar? Not so much. Sure, Brad Pitt went to MU, but what’s Hugh Hefner’s connection to College Town, U.S.A.? These and more are the tidbits of town trivia we’ve been collecting for months.

We skipped the conventional route of a long-form narrative accompanied by documentary photography. Some of our secrets are a few hundred words, others a couple sentences. All the photos are Instagrams. We’ve wanted to use Instagram art for a while, and this was the perfect opportunity. These secrets are the sort you would share on social media if you came across them, so that’s just what the reporters did. This is the unexpected side of CoMo, and now you can brush up on the local lore.

Whether you need conversation starters for your drive to the SEC Championship in Atlanta or your own Twitter feed is short on quick quips, you’ll be eager to share what you’re about to read.
